Hotspots
Updated over 4 months ago

Hotspots are interactive overlays that can be adjusted to fit around any UI element, turning it into a clickable area. They bring life to static screenshots or images by allowing audiences to hover for details or click for deeper functionality and navigation through product flows.

When to Use: Perfect for highlighting features or providing navigation between product screens.

Getting Started

  1. Click Create Items in the Toolbar and select Hotspot

  2. Reposition the Hotspot over the desired area or UI element

  3. If needed, adjust the Rounded Corners under the Style's Design Override section until the corner radius matches your UI

Hotspot Labels

Description: Spotlight Labels display text via a simple callout which can either trigger immediately or when the audience hovers over the Hotspot with their mouse or cursor.

When to Use: Perfect for providing quick tips, brief descriptions, or highlighting features at a glance. Can also be used to grab your audience's attention.

Setting Up Labels

  1. Toggle the Label on in your Hotspot settings and enter your desired text

  2. Adjust visibility to Always if you prefer to have the Label pop-up without requiring a hover action

  3. Adjust the Label position if needed

  4. Click off of the settings window to preview the label

Best Practices

  • Keep Label content concise and to the point.

  • Set the visibility to Always to grab your audience's attention

  • Set the visibility to Hover to keep the Hotspot subtle

  • Adjust the Label background and text color so it pops

Hotspot Actions

Hotspot Actions enhance the interactivity of your Stories by triggering specific responses when a Hotspot is clicked. These actions can open StoryPoints, navigate to another Scene, or direct your audience to external links. Here's a deep dive into the three most common actions for Hotspots:

Opening a StoryPoint

Description: This action opens a StoryPoint, providing additional information about a feature within your Story.

When to Use: Use this action when you want to offer more detailed explanations, supplementary media, or contextual information that enriches the audience’s understanding of a feature.

How to Trigger a StoryPoint

  1. Create a StoryPoint with the relevant content.

  2. Position that StoryPoint near the Hotspot

  3. Set the Style to Tooltip and toggle on Invisibility to hide the StoryPoint – you can preview this in preview mode

  4. Select the Hotspot and choose the Action to open the StoryPoint.

Best Practices

  • Ensure the StoryPoint content is directly related to the Hotspot.

  • Keep the StoryPoint concise to maintain audience engagement.

  • Use visuals and media within the StoryPoint to enhance understanding.

Navigating to Another Scene

Description: This action navigates the audience to a different scene within your Story, facilitating a seamless product tour or continuing the narrative outside your product.

When to Use: Ideal for guiding users through a step-by-step product demonstration or when showcasing relevant features or content.

How to Set It Up

  1. Define the target scene you want to navigate to.

  2. Select the Hotspot and choose Jump to Scene as the the Action

  3. Link the Hotspot to the desired scene.

  4. For the transition, select Quick Cut when navigating between two consecutive screens in a tour. Select Fade to Color when jumping to a new area of your product, or an entirely different scene.

Best Practices

  • Create a logical flow between scenes to guide the audience smoothly.

  • Use clear and inviting Hotspot designs to encourage interaction.

  • Provide a brief context or preview of the next scene to maintain interest.

Linking Externally

Description: This action allows Hotspots to link to external web pages, such as additional resources, documentation, or case studies.

When to Use: Use this action to provide access to supplementary content that enhances the understanding of your product or feature.

How to Link to a URL

  1. Obtain the URL of the external webpage.

  2. Select the Hotspot and choose the Action to link externally.

  3. Enter the URL and customize any link settings (e.g., UTM parameters).

Best Practices

  • Ensure the external link is relevant and adds value to the audience’s experience.

  • Clearly indicate that the Hotspot will lead to an external site.

  • Verify that the external content is up-to-date and accessible.

Best Practices for Hotspots

Hotspots are a powerful tool to enhance the interactivity and engagement of your Stories. To make the most out of this feature, consider the following best practices:

  • Relevance: Ensure that each HotSpot is relevant to the content and adds value to the experience. Avoid overloading your Story with unnecessary Hotspots.

  • Consistency: Maintain a consistent style across all Hotspots to create a cohesive and professional look. Consistent use of colors for informational Hotspots versus navigational Hotspots is crucial in keeping the experience intuitive.

  • Interactivity: Encourage audience interaction by using a mix of clickable and hover Hotspots. This keeps the experience engaging and dynamic. Again, use different colors to indicate whether they are clickable or hover.

  • Placement: Ensure your Hotspots do not obstruct important elements of your UI.

  • Visibility: Make HotSpots easily noticeable but not intrusive. Use subtle animations or pulsing effects to draw attention without being distracting.

  • Pulsing: If the Hotspot does not trigger an action, we recommend turning off Pulsing to avoid confusion

  • Round Corners: This is often overlooked, but matching the border radius of your Hotspots with product UI elements can significantly improve the overall quality over your Story and help the ScreenSpace UI blend seamlessly.

By following these best practices, you can create effective and engaging Hotspots that enhance your Stories and captivate your audience.
