Using a template is a great way to jumpstart your narrative design process. Our templates provide a solid foundation that can be easily customized to suit your specific needs and objectives.
This page will guide you through the benefits of using a template and the steps to get started.
Benefits of Using a Template
Time-Saving: Templates provide a pre-designed structure, allowing you to focus more on content and less on layout. This saves you significant time in the creation process.
Professional Design: Our templates are crafted by experts, ensuring a polished and professional look for your Story. This helps in maintaining high standards and consistency across your Stories.
Ease of Use: Templates are user-friendly and easy to customize. Even without extensive design skills, you can create engaging and visually appealing Stories.
Customizable Storyboards: Each template includes customizable storyboards, allowing you to adapt the template to your specific narrative while maintaining a coherent structure.
Consistency: Using a template helps ensure consistency in your narrative design, making it easier for your audience to follow and engage with your Story.
Steps to Use a Template
Before you begin, select a template in the Template Gallery located in the Story Center – accessible via the sidebar.
Click through the template preview to understand the flow. Once you've found the template you like, click Use Template.
1. Storyboard
Once you've selected your favorite template, you're ready to storyboard.
For linear Stories, you can use a simple table structure like this:
Scene | Hero Content | Interactive Content |
[Scene Name] | [Graphic or Screenshot] | StoryPoint: [Title] Tooltip 1: [Title] Tooltip 2: [Title] |
Tour • Step 1 | Dashboard_01.jpg | StoryPoint: Introducing AcmeShield Tooltip 1: Streamline Roadmapping |
|
|
|
For non-linear Stories – and a more visual storyboarding approach – we recommend using a free whiteboard mapping platform like Miro.
Design your storyboard to reflect the template you've selected. This will help guide your narrative and make Story creation that much easier.
In many cases, our templates include an interactive overview for guidance. Click on the template, and select View Storyboard to better understand the flow and implementation.
In most cases, our templates also include a customizable Miro storyboard. Click on the template, and select Download Storyboard.
Focus on the high-level flow and key points. Who is your audience and what do they need to see or experience to motivate action? You'll dial in the visuals and copy later from inside the ScreenSpace Visual Designer.
Capture
If your template includes product shots, you're now ready to capture. Our native capture tool is in the works.
So in the meantime....
Install the free Nimbus and Design Mode Chrome Extensions – and pin to your browser
Set your browser to full screen to ensure size consistency between screens
Increase browser zoom size to about 125%
[Optional] To modify text on screen, click the Design Mode icon, select and modify text, and then click the Design Mode icon again
In Nimbus, change "Action after the capture" to "Download"
In Nimbus settings, change Format to PNG and Delayed Screenshot to 2 seconds
Navigate to each screen and select "Visible part of page" in the Nimbus dropdown to capture your screen
Customize your template
Let's dive back into ScreenSpace and start modifying that template to fit your storyboard.
1. Open the Story that was generated from your template. Navigate to your Story Center and click on the respective Story.
2. Adjust the step count in the Story to match your storyboard. Simply Delete unnecessary steps, or Duplicate existing steps until it matches. Both options are under the Scene's menu on the left side of the screen.
3. [Optional] Got a mobile product or prefer a borderless screen? Click Device Options on the right side of the canvas and select your favorite device.
4. Replace screenshots with the ones you captured earlier. With the scene selected, click Replace Media under the Upload Media tool on the right side of the canvas.
5. Adjust interactive objects to match your storyboard. Simply drag and drop existing StoryPoints, Hotspots, and Buttons to align with your product – or create new ones under the Create Items tool in the Toolbar.
6. Add content inside each StoryPoint. You can either modify the existing placeholder text, or replace it entirely. Be sure to delete the purple "This StoryPoint Should..." Text Block before publishing.
7. Update the CTA buttons. Click on any CTA buttons, and modify the URL under the Action tab. Do the same inside StoryPoints – and anywhere else in the Story.
8. Dial in the design. Click the Appearance tool on the right side of the canvas. For a quick win, simply step through each of the tabs and change the purple color to your website's accent color (that would work well behind white text).
If you feel ambitious, go ahead and dial in the rest of the design settings.
Select Copy Design under the current Scene's menu inside the Storyboard. Then Paste the design to each of the other scenes.
And just like that – you completed your Story! 👏🏻
